Dorothea Staes joined the Perelman Centre for Legal Philosophy in October 2012 as a doctoral researcher. Her thesis was supervised by Prof. Isabelle Rorive (ULB) and Sébastien Van Drooghenbroeck (USL-B). It formed part of the ‘Interuniversity Attraction Poles’ on the Global Challenge of Human Rights Integration: Towards a Users’ Perspective. Dorothea defended her doctoral thesis in June 2017, entitled: "When the European Court refers to External Instruments. Mapping and Justifications". From September 2014 until December 2014, she was a visiting scholar at the University of California in Berkeley. During her research stay, Dorothea joined the Berkeley Comparative Equality and Anti-Discrimination Law Study Group. In the summer of 2015 she was a visiting scholar at the Universiteit Antwerpen.

Dorothea currently works as a trainee in the DG Justice of the European Commission, focusing on non-discrimination law.

Dorothea studied law and international relations at the Universiteit Antwerpen, the Université Nice Sophia Antipolis and the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. After obtaining a master’s degree in law (2008) and an advanced master’s in international relations and diplomacy (2010), she received a European master’s degree from the European Master’s Programme in Human Rights and Democratisation in Venice (2011). Dorothea also worked as an intern at the International Commission of Jurists in Geneva (2012).
