The article analyzes the origins and development of the modern Latin America political and legal orders in the light of the œuvre of Gabriel Garcia Marquez. It deepens into the magical realism and narrative journalism styles of Garcia Marquez to find the mythical origins of the Latin American states and their attempts to construct modern legal and political institutions. It highlights that the narrative mixture of fiction and reality that characterizes Garcia Marquez’s style provides, to a certain extent, a literary representation of the gap between law in books and law in action characterizing Latin American legal orders.
